Borough Sports 2016, St Mary's University

Keen athletes from years 4, 5 and 6 trained hard throughout the summer term to gain a place in the Borough Sports team. We were very impressed with their commitment and enthusiasm. This did, however, make it very hard to select the team to compete in the Borough Sports, which took place on 8th June at St Mary's University. I would like to take this opportunity to say well done for training with such gusto, and give a special mention to Grayson Elliott who very nearly made it into the Year  6 team but was just pipped at the post by very stiff competition. For the children in Years 4 and 5 you will have the opportunity to compete for a place next year, so keep running, throwing and jumping!

The weather was kind on the day of the event and the Marshgate athletes did us proud, showing terrific team spirit as well as individual grit and determination, especially in the long-distance events. Well done to Demi Flack for completing her 400m race despite being absolutely exhausted, she was a model of never giving up in the face of adversity. Charlotte Burgio competed in her first Borough Sports and we were all very proud of her when she passed the finish line with a huge smile  from ear to ear.

The Years 4 and 5 Marshgate team came 10th overall out of a field of 35 schools which is a brilliant result. This was a team effort in which every member gave their best. In terms of individual points  a huge well-done to Cameron Ott who came third overall out of 138 competitors with a massive 246 points, just two behind the overall winner, and Finn Phillips, who came 5th with 242 points.  Cameron was also the top thrower with a massive 36.2m. Alice Draper was the sixth fastest sprinter out of a field of 137 competitors. For a full breakdown of all the results visit

Thank you to all the Marshgate athletes for making it such a successful and fun day and of course  to all the inspirational staff who gave their time and energy either in training or on the day itself:  Miss Timms, Miss Jenkins, Miss Weir, Miss Wrigley, Miss Bartlett, Mr Hobbins, Mr Slade, Miss McClenning and Mrs Flavin.

Thank you to all the parents who very kindly volunteered to provide lifts, negating the need for the bus - hurrah!  There are photos on the Photo Gallery on the school website courtesy of Vicki Sharp.
