Guidance for Parents

At Marshgate, we constantly review new ways in which you can support your child at home with reading, writing and maths.  Here, below, are a selection of resources.

Further help in supporting READING

Please see guidance and strategies for you to help your child with their reading skills.  The video clips at the bottom of the page could be used to model strategies that encourage children's enjoyment of and help progress in reading.  We hope you find the information useful.

This link to Book Trust website will give you information/lists about new children's books, relevant books by age group and much much more.

We hope you find the following websites and clips of interest

Phonics Games to play with your child

We use many different resources when teaching phonics.  Here are a selection of websites you may like to use with your child at home. It is essential to practise not only the pure sound, for example /ay/, but also to blend those sounds together into words, such as p-l-ay, d-ay or s-t-ay.

English as an Additional Language Support

We are extremely fortunate at Marshgate to have a rich landscape of different languages being spoken by our children and their parents. If you are looking to support your child in learning English, the British Council has helpful information, links and lessons:

https://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/ (predominantly adult and advanced level lessons, both free and paid)

https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/ (aimed at children, with lessons for all levels, mostly free)

If you have any questions about how your child learns English as an additional language at Marshgate, please feel free to contact our coordinator, Mr Aylett, by emailing the school office.
